Botswana School Project is a 501c3 non-profit established in 2012 to provide school supplies, materials, and equipment for public school children and their teachers in Botswana.

Not long ago, Botswana was one of the poorest educated countries in the world, but now it is among the top three educated countries in Africa, yet it is still a third world country. Most people there speak three languages: Setswana, which is spoken by most people; their tribal language which varies depending on where they were born; and English which is the official language of the government and therefore the country. Beginning in second grade students are taught to read and write in English. 90% of young people in Botswana are literate. Still this third world country provides only a basic education for their children through 10th grade.

While the people of Botswana may be well educated compared to the rest of Africa, they are poorly prepared to enter a global world. When my sister Barbara and I met with a principal in Botswana, we asked for a pen and paper to write down the school’s email address. Not only did she not have an email address, she didn’t have paper or pen as “all the supplies went to the students.”

This was a school without an email address. This was a school without a single computer. This was a principal without pen or paper.

I knew at that moment we had to do something about it.

When we spoke with the teachers about what they needed, their list was long but reasonable.  They needed paper, pencils and basic supplies. They needed a printer so they didn’t have to make hand copies for their students. They needed chairs and desks for each child. They wanted to replace blackboards that were 30+ years old. They wanted books for each child so that children didn’t have to share one math or reading book between 3 children.

You have the opportunity to change the life of a child through your donation. We hope you will join us in supporting these children. All of us involved in the Botswana School Project are grateful for your support.

Sincerely,

Pat
